Water in ditches

It's a problem Cass County officials say is only going to get worse in the coming days: Water-filled ditches. After a double-fatal rollover accident Tuesday where a dive team had to pull passengers out, authorities say the problem isn't just people swerving into these low-lying areas by accident, but those using it for some dangerous fun.

Every year they fill up...

"The water builds up in the ditches because it can't sink into the ground, because the ground's frozen."

And like the rest of the flood, these waters have risen quickly, causing risky conditions.

"You're still in danger, and like I said, it could be two feet deep, it could be six feet deep, you don't know really know until you're actually in it and your car is sinking and water is coming into your car."

And it's not just the interstate, but the county and rural roads where people are using this for recreational fun.

SHERIFF PAUL LANEY: "We had an incident last night where we had two adults and one juvenile out mudding; they were out hitting the ditches having a good time, in their eyes. And they had been drinking while they were doing it."

All while authorities are trying to fight battles, elsewhere.

SHERIFF LANEY: "There's absolutely nothing positive about what they went out and did last night other than for their own selfish interest."

And as the crest gets closer and ditches continue to fill up, the danger will only get higher, too.
