Linton might be spared major flood damage

LINTON, N.D. (AP) — Beaver Creek continues to rise and threaten the south central North Dakota town of Linton, but the National Weather Service expects it to crest much lower than it did last year.

The creek is expected to crest over the weekend at 14.3 feet, about 4½ feet lower than last year, when the creek hit an all-time high, washing out bridges and roads and swamping about 70 homes.

Residents have been busy sandbagging. As many as 10,000 might be used to guard against the rising water.

Emmons County Emergency Manager Mary Senger says officials are cautiously optimistic that the water will not get high enough this spring to do major damage.
