Temporary earthen levees going up in Oakport

Oakport Township, Minn. (WDAY TV) - Flood preparations are going around the clock in Oakport Township.

The biggest change to this spring’s flood fight is the temporary earthen levees going up.

The Corps is overseeing the construction of the levees. The Red River is supposed to crest in Oakport late Friday, or Saturday.

That gives the township five days to prepare, last year they had eight days. The levees will protect 430 homes, but 100 homes will still need sandbags.

With the temporary earthen levees, Oakport will need about 200 thousand sandbags. Without them, the township would need one point three million sandbags.
