FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Volunteers are filling sandbags and building dikes while contractors construct clay levees along the fast-rising Red River to help protect nearby homes from the murky waters.

North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven on Tuesday commended the community for its hard work in preparing for the flood.

Officials don't expect the river to get as high as last year's record flood. Near Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn. the river is forecast to crest Saturday about 20 feet above the flood stage. The waters flowing over the river's banks could threaten nearby houses, roads and parks.

More than 415,000 sandbags have been delivered to the area and residents have been clearing out their backyards to make way for dikes to be built.
