Special election halted by restraining order

Fergus Fall, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It looks like voters in Fergus Falls won't head to the polls on April 22nd for a special election after all.

An Ottertail District Court judge today issued a temporary restraining order, stopping the election.

It centers on an ordinance brought by a group that wants to require projects costing more than $1 or $2-million dollars to go to a public vote. They pointed to the council approving a $9-million dollar ice arena in Fergus Falls.

The judge says the proposed spending ordinance is too vague and if it was approved by the voters could invade the powers of the city council. He says delaying the vote won't hurt the community.

He set a June 23 hearing to consider a permanent injunction on the matter.
