Candidate for governor stops in Breckenridge during 87 day tour

Breckenridge, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A former U.S. senator says he's not relying on his name to earn him a spot as the next Minnesota Governor.

Mark Dayton was in Breckenridge today, in the middle of an 87 day tour stopping in 87 different counties. Dayton plans to raise taxes on the wealthy to help keep more cuts from hitting education programs and state agencies.

Many are familiar with Dayton because of his family's wealth and their former retail business, but Dayton says this race is a whole new ballgame and he plans to earn his stripes.

“Campaigns are proving grounds. I'm out here proving myself like everyone else. Like try-outs for the Vikings, you have to go out there and you have to earn your position over again every year.”

Dayton served as a U.S. Senator from 2001 to 2007.
