Plumbers remind homeowners to check sump pumps

(WDAY TV) - With the melt on, nows the time to check your sump pumps. Plumbers say it's the most important thing you can do to prevent flooding in your home. Sump pumps usually last about three years.

You should hear it pumping out water, if you don't hear noise, there is problem.

“Pumps should be switched outside, and the hose should be draining away from the home and to check that hose so that it doesn't freeze up. Because we run in to a lot of times now where temperatures dip below freezing at night and those hoses could freeze up and that could cause problems as well.”

If you have sewer back-flow valves, those should also be checked every year, to make sure they're still working correctly.
