(WDAY TV) - The Waubun School District is getting up to $1-million dollars in federal funds to improve student performance.

Minnesota won a $34-million dollar federal grant earmarked for low-performing schools. The goal is to improve standardized math and reading scores.

Over the last three years, the district has cut $1-million dollars from its $7.8 million budget. School officials say the money will come in handy.

Last year, only about 27% of Waubun secondary students scored "proficient" in their math grades. Statewide, 64% of students are proficient in math. The federal government wants changes in place by next school year.
