Volunteer turnout for sandbag effort picks up

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - While some sandbag volunteers are getting frustrated there aren't more people from Moorhead helping, turnout is picking up. People, not even living in the city, are part of why the lofty goal of 300-thousand bags is closer to completion.

With the increased need for help, sandbagging efforts are finally picking up in Moorhead.

“Do what I can.”

Julie Sachs is just one of many volunteers, not from here. She drove from Pelican Rapids to lend a hand.

“They got a long fight probably ahead of them.”

Sachs doesn't mind, nearly one fourth of the volunteers don't even live in Moorhead. She's happy to add value to the community in a time of desperate need.

“It just proves in Minnesota, we really have big hearts. We're just trying to help.”

“The citizens of Moorhead will show up in great numbers if we get into a flood event.”

City workers say many faces are becoming familiar.

“Some people stay longer than others.”

Volunteers are coming back again.

“The river isn't coming up; it's a lot of hard work.”

“You know, there are ups and downs.”

Oakport Homeowner Chad Martin works for Moorhead. He too is filling bags. Martin is glad out of towners are picking up a shovel, again this flood fight.

“They're coming over for overnights and for the day.”

After a slow week, even though piles of sand remain, more bins are filled. Thanks to the help of kind hearts. Still, pleas from one volunteer to not sit and wait for the water to rise.

“Just come out and help. Everybody come on.”

One lady from Oakport told us off camera she's angry Moorhead homeowners are not getting out like they should to save their own community. As of 5:00 today 84-thousand sandbags had been filled in the city.
