Beach dominates Thompson in overtime for win

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Beach scored the first nine points of overtime and coasted to a 76-66 win over Thompson in the opening round of the North Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament Thursday.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Beach scored the first nine points of overtime and coasted to a 76-66 win over Thompson in the opening round of the North Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament Thursday.

Brittney Dietz had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Emily Hardy 22 for the Bucs (24-0), who outscored the Tommies 17-7 in the extra period to move into the semifinals.

Beach's previous two tournament appearances were in 1989-90 and resulted in two state championships.

Whitney Sponsler had 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead Thompson (18-8). Jennifer Hegg added 16.

Beach tried holding the ball for the final 30 seconds of regulation to get the last shot, but turned it over. Thompson's Samantha Brorby then missed a shot at the buzzer, and the game went into overtime.
