City plan encourages making the Fargo more dense

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The tide has turned on a spreading Fargo as city planners now look up, not out

The city's 50 year plan encourages making the city more dense, meaning more multi-family buildings, smaller residential plots, more mixing of businesses and residential properties and some taller buildings.

Fargo's senior planner says the city is running out of space to spread, it's also more expensive to spread because you have to invest in new infrastructure like sewer, water and roadways.

“If you're dealing with a situation with a lot that is maybe 20-thousand dollars, but the cost for special assessments to service that property may be that or more. I think that will dissuade a lot of first time home buyers and people interested in new housing.”

The city growth plan is not mandated like the city's land development code, but leaders use it as a guide when they approve new developments.
