ND county officials ponder fix for bat problem

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) — McLean County officials are considering what to do about bats in the county courthouse after a second employee has been sickened.

The county commission is expected to consider moving workers out of the building and sealing off the main building from an annex at its Tuesday meeting.

The county has had bats — at one time estimated at 150 — in the courthouse attic for decades.

So far, two employees have been diagnosed with a serious illness caused by exposure to bat guano. They've been relocated out of the courthouse.

In light of the most recent illness, court hearings have been moved to the Washburn City Hall.

Parts of the courthouse date back about 100 years. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.
