City of Lisbon declares state of emergency

Lisbon, ND (WDAY TV) - The city of Lisbon still has people out of their homes from the 2009 flood. Now after the Weather Services flood prediction for this spring, Lisbon has declared a state of emergency.

At an emergency meeting Lisbon officials discussed their first steps if there's another flood fight. The town had a record crest last year of 22.83 feet, and now there's a 50 percent chance the river will rise even higher this year.

"There's nothing really good with the forecasting it all looks to be exceeding what last years levels were."

The council will wait for advice from the Corps before building clay dikes. If the format is like last years, members say they'll likely build up to 26 feet or 2 feet higher than last year.

"Best thing we can do is have the data to help support them and let them make the determination, as soon as they come in it's their show mostly."

The mayor says the news of a possible higher crest than last year is nerve-racking but after defeating that flood they're ready to battle the waters again.

"We're having a couple of spring gates put on the river for the storm water sewage so we made some updates and what not, had a couple of man holes that were re-built. So I think were a little bit more prepared this time than last time."

It is a little town getting ready for another big fight. For now, council members say they'll wait for more information before making the first move. The mayor says they're two months ahead of where they were last year.
