Area stores get flood supplies ready for spring
(WDAY TV) - After a long, snowy winter in many parts of the country, Fargo-Moorhead not only faces a 25 percent chance of a flood 2009 repeat, but it also may compete with other regions for flood supplies. Stores are preparing for another major flood. Shoppers are going about things a little differently than last year.
Flood fight staples are making their end-cap debut a little early this year at Ace hardware in Moorhead. Last year, Ace ran out of some supplies. This year, they're taking the chance for leftovers, already placing 2009-like orders.
“We are preparing for possibly what happened last year. We hope it's not that bad.
Flood related inventory is moving fast. In Moorhead, the hot item is drain plugs. In Fargo, sump pumps.
Nodak manager Greg Yanish says that's partly because people know what they need. Someone in Oakport already ordered this 3 inch sucking hose and gas pump even requesting this discharge hose that can pump the water over a diking system.
Learning from last year's flood, Greg says they now sell a tube that is less likely to freeze, but he says for the most part they have the same flood supplies, just more of them than at this time last year.
A back to back record flood would definitely be new for our area, but the age old idea to learn from our past helps prepare us. Nodak is also stocking up on supplies early to avoid competing with other regions expecting to flood. Some local stores ran out of snow blowers this winter because of the high demand for those across the country.
