Town hall meetings held to keep homeowners informed

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The North Dakota Department of Emergency Services and FEMA are teaming up to hold town hall meetings throughout North Dakota. It’s an outreach and education effort to help homeowners plan for spring flooding.

They talked about the latest outlook, insurance, and preparation. The idea is to give tips of what can be done now to be ready for what could happen. Homeowners heard presentations before asking questions.

“Everyone lives in a flood plain whether you have a high risk or low risk. We want everyone to know what they can do to prepare for themselves and keep themselves safe.”

Nearly 50 homeowners showed up for the meeting. Staying prepared was the number one reason for people to want to get informed.

Merle and Mardy Mcmorrow say they came to the meeting for a variety of reasons. They're taking away some insurance tips, things like what is covered in the lower level of your home during a flood.

The couple moved to Fargo in 2001. Last year was the first time their home in Rose Creek was affected by rising water.

"We had dikes put up and down our block."

Merle says he has flood insurance. His home is protected to 40 feet, but he still came to the flood meeting to learn more and stay prepared because nothing is ever guaranteed."

"At 87-years old, I could be dead by the time the flood gets here but not overly concerned."

Merle suggests more people attend meetings like this, he says more knowledge never hurts. There will be a similar meeting in Valley City March 1st.
