Some homeowners are already giving up the flood fight
Heritage Hills, ND (WDAY TV) - Some people forced to evacuate during last year's flood say they still own their house, but won't do anything to protect it, except buy flood insurance. Why some people are giving up the flood fight for it begins.
This is Craig and Marcia Strehlow's house, but instead of living here, they're paying 735 a month out of their own pockets for a temporary apartment. They haven't lived here since they were air boated out during the 2009 flood.
The house was heavily damaged and put on the county's second tier buyout list, but FEMA doesn't have enough money to buy it and about 40 other homes on the list. And until it does, people like Craig and Marcia are living in limbo and paying to keep up a house they don't want.
Craig says he won't bother sandbagging because he says he’s spending thousands on that and reconstructive yard work he was never reimbursed for. He says he purchased maximum flood insurance.
10 of the 13 homes in Heritage Hills are on Cass County’s first tier buyout list which FEMA already agreed to fund. They have received buyout offers.
