Just months after flood clean up, some homeowners prepare again

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - With cities and counties "dusting off" their flood fighting plans, imagine what this must be like for the thousands of homeowners up and down the valley, who feel like they just hauled away that last sandbag. Just months after remodeling and cleaning up, some homeowners are mentally preparing.

“Let me tell you, I can build a sandbag dike.”

It takes just a few seconds. Looking at photos from last spring's flood, Lisa Faulkner realizes what a nightmare she and her husband went through.

“The whole place looked like a war zone.”

The couple lives in one of Moorhead's oldest neighborhoods, just west of Woodlawn Park. Several homes flooded here. The Faulkners lost their basement. This after the Guard told them and their neighbors that they had to leave.

“We were basically terrorized into leaving. Which is what you should not do, you should stay.”

Lisa and her husband not only came back to their neighborhood, they did not take up the offer of a buy out.

“We committed to stay so now is not the time to run.”

But fighting the flood this spring will be a much lonelier battle for Lisa and her husband. That's because many of the homeowners took advantage of the buyout, leaving their houses behind.

“You kind of think that after that one, it can't be that worse again, right away, give us a couple of years.”

Now all this flooding talks as well as news every night of flood preparations. Life on the river, those who choose it have every intention of keeping it. Moorhead has neighborhood meetings set up throughout the city. People in Woodlawn Park will share their concerns with city leaders March 1st.
