Norway company demonstrates the latest flood fighting hardware
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As Fargo prepares to fill and load a million sandbags in preparation for a spring flood, a proposal to help hold back the Red from a company in Norway. Today, area flood fighters got the chance to see what Aqua-Fence could do to keep the water out without piling the sandbags.By: Kevin Wallevand, WDAY
It could be mistaken for crowd barriers at a rock concert or boards around a park district hockey rink. Aqua Fence is the latest flood fighting hardware to be offered those metro leaders who are preparing to battle the river again.
“It is interesting, a unique invention. I have always thought that sandbags were kind of primitive way of flood fighting so I am always looking at interested for a better way to do things.”
The mobile barriers can be taken down and put up quickly. To be used in place of a sandbag wall.
“It has been tested to be used on top of dikes so I was here in April and watched your flood fights at that time and it is a typical application to extend heights of dike and use it to guide water away from buildings.”
The demonstration for local flood fighters today was just that. An alternative to what's been used to hold back the rivers. The looming question, will snow and ice make flood protection a challenge for any high tech tool?”
“The more water the better and tighter it becomes.”
While the Aqua Fence concept comes out of Norway, a Fargo-Moorhead company called Space Age Synthetics can be called on to mass produce the product.
