Snowmobile driver flees after killing family dog on Pelican Lake
Pelican Rapids, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A family in lakes country is reeling after an unthinkable act of animal cruelty. Two members of the Richard Barry family watched in horror as a snowmobiler hit and killed the family dog on Pelican Lake, then fled.By: Travis Skonseng, WDAY
The past two days have been a living nightmare for J-D Larson. The Detroit Lakes man saw his beloved 19 month old Yellow Lab Golden Retriever mix, die. Now, he just wants closure.
“Rosie was to me one of a kind.”
In the short amount of time J.D. Larson had his dog, their bond grew deep.
“Everywhere I went, Rosie went.”
That came to a sudden halt Monday afternoon when Larson and his mother, Lynne, took his dog outside to play.
“It happened so fast.”
This picture shows two snowmobilers, just behind the family home, on Pelican Lake. Dog Rosie is in between the machines.
“My heart went into my stomach. They missed her by inches.”
“Another snowmobile came right behind them, hit her head on, and literally accelerated even faster.”
The two estimate the riders to be going at least 60 miles per hour. Within seconds, they ran into Rosie. She was still breathing and twitching, clinging to life a little longer.
“I panicked. I froze and I said she's dead.”
“Just the sheer horror, it was so shocking to see and to witness and to hear.”
Larson is now posting these fliers in bars, banks, and stores. All in hopes someone will come forward.
“The fact that there is three individuals and they all know about this and not one of them was willing to stop.”
Still in shock, Larson says he just wants people to be aware there's a time and place to ride fast. He doesn't want anyone else to go through the pain he's now feeling.
“I see no difference than what happened here and a child. That was my dog and to me she meant the world.”
Larson reported the incident to the Ottertail County Sheriff's Department, but there's not much that authorities can do at the moment. He's offering a reward. If you have any information, call 218-841-2722.
