Force goaltender follows in his father's footsteps
Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - Being the son of a professional athlete can't be easy. Especially when your dad is an all time great, but for Force goaltender Dayn Belfour, he's welcomed the pressure. Now he's back in his dad's old stomping grounds and he couldn't be happier.By: Dom Izzo, WDAY
“Having to deal with the mental and emotional pressure of my dad, it is big shoes to fill. Hopefully I can fill them quite well.”
Dayn belfour has been following his dad ever since he laced up a pair a skates, but unlike his father, he didn't start out as a goalie. He was a forward growing up.
“I was about 12 years old when I made the switch. When I was a forward, all I wanted to do is play goalie. Now that I'm a goalie, I can’t wait to be a forward.”
Belfour is now playing goal in the same state where his dad became a legend. Eddie led the Sioux to a national championship in 1987 and then a prestigious NHL career and Dayn realizes how unique his opportunity is.
“It's a big deal. I've been following in his footsteps. I'm in North Dakota now, wondering what's going to happen next.”
What's next for Belfour is trying to lead the Force into the playoffs and his team is glad they've got a Belfour behind them.
“He's a good goaltender; he can play at next level, he just needs a break.”
“He a big goofball and always goofs around. It really loosens everyone up; we know he'll do the job.”
The goofball goalie who gets it from his team as well. Belfour and the first place Force host Cedar Rapids Friday night.
