City of Fargo unveils Flood Information Center
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Homeowners in Fargo now has a unique way to see when and if their house and property will be hit by rising water. The city is unveiling a Flood Information Center on its website. Part of it is an interactive map.By: Travis Skonseng, WDAY
After complaints last spring, the city has changed it's website to be less confusing and more user friendly. Homeowners now can get the most up to date information easier, using creative methods.
Homeowner Marjorie Schlossman has battled floods, both in 97 and 09.
“It was a huge fight both times.”
Now, though the South Fargo woman doesn't think it will flood as bad, she's still preparing.
“Absolutely, we want up to date information.”
Schlossman is getting a first look at the new interactive map on the city's website. She's finding out at what flood stage her home and property are affected by water.
“It says I begin to get affected at 36, the house does, which is true.”
Like Schlossman, the city is hoping more homeowners take advantage of the site and not wait until last minute.
“Let's them know whether they need to prepare for the flood.”
It takes just minutes. Then your property information becomes available. The site will tell you if your property is affected between 18 and 42 feet.
“You can see different flood stages by the flood scroll bar.”
The site allows you to zoom in, see other homeowners flood information, and see air photos.
“That means areas protected by levees.”
The goal is to better protect more homes this time around should there be a flood. Possibly save people money, time, and stress.
“And of course blue is wet side of the levee.”
For Schlossman, the site shows her what she couldn't see from the ground, the shape of her house, and the fact it's much closer to the Red River than her neighbors.
“I was really surprised.”
Last year, the city had a similar site. It was much more complicated and you needed help to walk your way through it. The city is getting good feedback with this site.
