The email warns people their cell numbers will go public this month to telemarketing companies, but you can call a "do not call list" to stop it.

North Dakota Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer has talked with phone companies and attorneys to make sure this is not legitimate. Every few months, a scam like this pops up to scare people into releasing their information.

"To this point, the law protects cell phone numbers from being published. You have to opt into a directory if you have a cell number and you want your number to be listed."

Cramer advises people to call their companies if they have any questions.
