Edgewood Vista pool table draws a crowd
(WDAY Sports) - The game of pool, or billiards, is something many of us have played at some time in our lives. But recently, I came across a group of ladies on south Fargo who are not only just learning the game, they're loving it!By: Trevor Peterson, WDAY
“It started with 2-3 women, now we're up to like seven.”
“I don't miss unless it's an emergency.”
“When we first started, they had no idea even how to hold the stick.”
“One day here I made five in a row. You wouldn't believe it now, but I did!”
Every Tuesday at one o'clock, the pool table at Edgewood Vista draws a crowd as a group of 5-7 ladies dubbed "The Pool Sharks" grab their cues, chalk up, and take their best shots.
What do you love most about Tuesdays and coming here and playing?
“Of course hitting the ball.”
Does it make you feel like a kid again?
“It does, it does.”
Though their hands aren't as steady as they used to be, their focus and determination is as strong as ever. When Edgewood Activities Director Gayle Warren started the ladies pool group one year ago, most of the "Sharks" had never picked up a cue in their life.
“Pool tables were always in the beer parlors and women weren't allowed in the beer parlors, only men.”
“It brings out a little of their competitive edge. Some are very competitive. They love to have fun and laugh.”
Now I hear they call you guys the sharks? What does that mean?
“I guess in means we're pretty good.”
Do you prefer the stripes or the solids? Do you find one of them goes in better than the other? Why do you and the ladies come down here? What is it about this day every week?
“It’s a lot of fun being with the ladies and its exercise. It's a challenge. It's just like life, you win a few, and you lose a few.”
The ladies pool day has become so popular at Edgewood that they're adding a teaching class.
