Fargo police say armed suicidal man who approached officer shot himself

An unidentified suicidal man shot himself after approaching a police officer this afternoon in the 2400 block of Main Avenue, say Fargo police.

Other media have claimed the man died, but a Forum reporter on the scene said the police would only say he is "seriously" wounded. The suspect also appeared to be attended to by members of F-M Ambulance, though the man was not rushed to a hospital.

Speaking from the scene near Main Avenue and 25th Street, Fargo Police Lt. Joel Vettel says police encountered the individual during a routine traffic assist on the 2400 block of Main Avenue between 12:20 and 12:30 p.m. today. The officer involved with the traffic assist was approached by a man walking on a street who told the officer he was thinking of taking his own life. The man pulled a pistol and then walked west and then south, crossing Main Avenue. The armed individual was not involved in the traffic stop.

After being approached by the man - who has not been identified - police officers tried to talk to the man but the situation escalated and the man shot himself in the head.

The entire incident lasted about 30 minutes, according to Vettel.

During the incident, Main Avenue was blocked off from traffic and businesses in the area were warned and told to close. During the scene police officers at road blocks were armed with rifles in hand.
