A local 2009 study shows most regional parents say dangerous intersections, distracted drivers and the weather cause them to drive kids to school. The study also reveals students who do walk say all the cars make it difficult to enter school grounds.

The study will be used as some area leaders look at how to encourage more walkers.

“Safe Routes to School is providing more opportunity for kids to have physical activity and hopefully improve their health.”

Tonnies says the first steps in making changes will be organizing walking groups as early as this spring. Safe Routes to School is a nationwide initiative funded in part with federal transportation dollars.
