Snowmobile crash kills officer in Douglas County
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (AP) — A snowmobile crash in rural Douglas County has claimed the life of an Alexandria police officer.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded at about 8 p.m. Friday on the Central Lakes Trail east of Alexandria.
Deputies found 31-year-old Patrick Callaghan, of Alexandria, and 25-year-old Mark Ruder, of Glencoe, injured. They were taken to a hospital, where Callaghan died.
According to city records, Callaghan joined the Alexandria Police Department in November 2007 after working in Glenwood.
The Star-Tribune of Minneapolis reported Callaghan's father worked for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and his great-great grandfather, great-grandmother and great-grandfather were also police officers for the city.
