PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Health officials in Rhode Island say black pepper used to coat salami is the possible cause of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened people in 40 states including North Dakota and South Dakota.

Tests show the same strain of salmonella that has made at least 189 people ill since July was also found in two open containers of pepper at meat company Daniele International's facility in Burrillville, Rhode Island.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 37 people have been hospitalized in the outbreak. Daniele International recalled 1.2 million pounds of pepper-coated salami last Saturday.
