NDSU hiring freeze likely to end next week

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Interim North Dakota State University President Richard Hanson says he expects to lift a partial hiring freeze on Feb. 4. Hanson called for a freeze on 75 percent of open positions in December to deal with a budget shortfall that has now reached $2.5 million.

He attributed the shortfall to lagging tuition collections and a greater number of tuition waivers.

Hanson said he expects the deficit to be eliminated by the end of the month because of savings from salaries and benefits of the positions that were held open, and because of a cut in operating expenses.
