DEERING, N.D. (AP) — McHenry County authorities have rescued about 20 dogs from a mobile home in the north central North Dakota town of Deering. Most have been taken to a Minot animal shelter.

Chief Deputy Trey Skager says the owner of the mobile home lives in another town and apparently had not been to the home recently. He says a neighbor had been trying to care for the dogs.

Authorities say the home apparently was being used as an indoor kennel and that conditions were abysmal, with matted hair, feces and urine everywhere. Skager says the smell was overwhelming. But he says the dogs appeared to be in fairly good shape considering the conditions.

Skager says any charges in the case will be up to the state's attorney's office.
