Calvary Lutheran Church has raised about $75,000 to pay for the freeze-dried meals of protein and rice. Church officials hope to raise $170,000. Minnesota Public Radio reports church officials are looking for volunteers to help pack all the meals this week.
Church outreach director Dawn Dresser says the food drive was planned before last week's massive earthquake in one of the world's poorest countries.
She says the disaster has helped focus attention on the country. She hopes the focus endures even after the short-term crisis is dealt with.
The earthquake Tuesday killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed three-quarters of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
