Hoeven for Senate?
(WDAY TV) - It's a question dominating headlines across the state, even turning heads nationally, who will fill U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan's shoes? The answer may impact which political party will dominate congress in future years. Governor John Hoeven's name has been in the hat for months.
The question everyone seems to be asking is will the North Dakota Governor set his sights on the Senate? We finally heard from the potential candidate himself.
The Governor still shies away from the topic saying campaigns last way too long, but he made it clear he will make some sort of an announcement soon. Hoeven is viewed by many as the leading option for a Republican candidate whose chances of winning just increased with the announcement his toughest competition, will not run.
Hoeven says for right now, he's focused on his current job and what's good for the state.
“This is a state that's rising up. North Dakota is rising up and we want to continue to build on that momentum, but it takes a good business climate in the state and in the country. The national recession has affected us. We've got to create an environment in which people can be successful, businesses can be successful.”
Hoeven says he had no idea Dorgan would not seek re-election. He also says the national Republican Party has encouraged him to run for Senate.
