(WDAY TV) - The post office continues to feel effects from the Christmas storm. In fact, it has meant a boost in business because so many people from the metro stayed home and so many others could not get to Fargo-Moorhead, Christmas presents that were under the tree are slowly making their way to loved ones via the mail.

The night crew was held over today, just to take care of the pile of packages that rolled in the downtown post office. Christmas presents from grandma and favorite aunts who could not make it here because of the storm are arriving now.

“We see some coming in and some going out in the walk up lines.”

“Typically these floor workers who are here overnight would be done at 7 in the morning, but because of the increase in packages they were kept later into the day.”

Deanne Kolle has worked here 25 years. Today, she and others on her night shift crew stayed longer to sort thru the holiday leftovers, gifts still rolling into and out of town.

“Yes, late shoppers but the weather had a lot to do with it.”

The Fargo Post Office says the good news is the storm hit after its busiest days here, allowing the carriers to get the majority of the gifts and mail out before the blizzard arrived.

Carriers will not deliver mail to places where snow has not been shoveled from sidewalks. But the Fargo Post Office says for the most part homeowners have been getting walks cleared to make way for the mail.

“We will leave a notice if we feel it is unsafe to deliver and we will not deliver your mail. You can pick it up but we will not deliver the mail to that address until it gets cleaned up.”

In addition to clean sidewalks, the post office also requests that steps be cleared of ice for the mail carriers.
