WABASHA, Minn. (AP) — The Wabasha County sheriff's department and the state Department of Natural Resources are investigating a possible poisoning case that left two dogs dead and their owners sick.

Two of the Dankers' family Saint Bernards, Miley and Fergie, died after possibly eating meat not far from their Wabasha house. And Briana Dankers says she and her father, who were in close contact with the dogs, had stomachaches and headaches. They went to the hospital, but are better now.

County Sheriff Rodney Bartsh tells WCCO-TV the dogs likely ate deer carcasses that were poisoned to kill coyotes.

The department is working to clean up the area and see if there are environmental impacts, such as ground water contamination.

Investigators say it's unclear whether the person who put the meat out will be charged.
