Bottom line, I don't think Breske was ever really into it at NDSU. He'd been a major college guy, got let go late at Wyoming and needed a job, probably never planned on being at NDSU more than a year.
Now I’m not saying he didn't care and didn't try, but you've gotta have that sold out high energy mindset to coach defense, and if he knew this was just a stopover, maybe he didn't have that edge. His guys didn’t' tackle well, didn't attack the line of scrimmage, didn't shoot gaps, didn't challenge well for the football and were often out of position.
In fairness he was fighting with one hand tied behind his back. Talent was lacking, and injuries hammered the line backing corps. Strange deal, when he was brought in we thought it was the best hire in years. Looking back on it now, the defense never looked worse.
The final score was 30-17, but it wasn't that close. Is it the beginning of the end or just a bad day at the office? Probably the latter, but you'd like to see the coaching staff have the guys a little more ready. They were not prepared for the Card’s intensity.
The rushing game continues to struggle, masked by a soft schedule; it's not what it's been. This offense is not built on the running game, and if they can't fix it, they won't go far in the playoffs. They look a little predictable in their run formations, and they've got to let AP run it a bunch to get everyone some confidence.
The EJ Henderson loss is the big deal. Brinkley is a rookie and Leber is not the physical presence inside that Henderson was.
