Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Now that the streets of Fargo are decked for the holidays, you may be wondering why the lights are out on many downtown decorations.

About 700 light poles are decorated around downtown. Some with Christmas wreaths like this are lit at night. Just feet away, similar decorations are not.

Most of the items are within seven years old, but some date back to the 1970's. Many of the light poles are also old. Some don't have an outlet or simply don't work. City leaders say that this shows just how tight money is.

"If we tried to tackle everything in one year, it would really break the bank and it's the folks from downtown that pay for the decorations through a special assessment that was created in order for us to have winter decorations like this."

The city plans to install new light poles with outlets during upcoming construction projects.
