PILLAGER, Minn. (AP) — A man is recovering after he fell through the ice on Gull Lake in north-central Minnesota while trying to retrieve his dog.

Pillager (PIHL'-uh-jer) Fire Chief Randy Lee says the man had laid a ladder on the ice Sunday morning to crawl out to the dog, which had wandered onto the ice near the man's home on Wilson Bay. The man and the ladder broke through the ice.

Lee tells the Brainerd Dispatch the man was still holding onto the ladder when firefighters and a neighbor pulled the man to shore. The man was taken to a Brainerd hospital for observation. His name was not available.

The fire chief says the dog was out of the water and OK when firefighters arrived.
