Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - In a time when some companies are laying employees off and struggling to get in the black, an arts and crafts store in Fargo says it's setting sales records this year.

Andrea Plagman and kate wutzler swiftly scour rows of yarn and fabrics. But these sisters aren't meticulously perusing the shelves at hobby lobby in fargo to find a gift.

"I'm making one that's a Mario theme and you can't go anywhere and buy a Mario theme. So it's easier just to make it."

"Doing this is something different that they'll get under the Christmas tree that they don't expect to get."

Across the massive craft warehouse, another handmade gift giver Lizette Grivicic, but she's looking for glitter and glue for personalized family cards.

"As gifts, I mean family friends, I don't do box cards at all. I do my own gift tags and everything is hand-made and I think that family and friends really appreciate that."

"I always spend the amount that I would spend on gifts."

In some cases, it may not necessarily be cheaper to take this and turn it into this for a gift. But for many this, Christmas it's about making it more personal and one of a kind. Thanks to this kind of gifting.

"It will be our best year when things are all said and done."

In a year when many companies are struggling, thoughtful gestures are helping this store thrive.
