Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - It wasn't Tuesdays with Morrie, it was a Wednesday with Gardy today at the Fargodome. Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire took the stage at the Northern Ag Expo this afternoon.

The team has already traded for Milwaukee shortstop J-J Hardy and now will try to sign Joe Mauer to a contract extension and since this is the most wonderful time of the free agent year, the skipper does a little wish listing himself.

“I become just as big a fan as you guys in the off-season. I see the names and believe me I'm on the horn leaving messages all the time. Hey Billy, Figgins is out there what's his status, and he starts chuckling, we talk about them all and there's some good ones out there and our biggest goal right now is to sign Joe Mauer and we know that we have to get that done through the winter, but we've got some positions to fill and there's going to be a lot of work done this winter.”

Are you optimistic something can get done with Mauer this winter?

“Yeah absolutely I would be shocked if it doesn't. Everyone knows the enormity of the situation and what he means to our ball club and this community and fan base. He should always be a Minnesota Twin. He should never leave here and I think our guys are going to try to get that done.”

Can he get too expensive for this organization or do you think the Twins are going to have to write that check no matter how many numbers are on it?

“Sure people can get too expensive and you can't put all your eggs in one basket and if you want to win and make the playoffs it's not just about signing one guy and your boat goes to him and you do the best you can. That's the great thing about it, we can sign Joe Mauer and compete and have a good ball club around him with him being one of the centerpieces along with Mornie. So it's a great world for us right now moving into a new stadium with perfect timing we've got a little more revenue now with a new stadium, we can do this deal and get it done and still build our team around him.”

What does J.J. Hardy bring to this team?

“Well, I haven't had much chance to see him other than on the other side. Joe Mauer loves him, says he's a quality guy. I've seen him play against us; I've seen him put balls in the seats against us. I've seen him make plays at shortstop so I know he's a really good baseball player and a quality person so that pretty much fits our mold.”

Gardenhire says it was hard to see Carlos Gomez leave in that trade. Saying not too many players have my cell phone number and he does.
