Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - The family gathering and holiday meal took on special meaning for a Moorhead family. It was just days ago we were finally able to see and hear from Lyle and Norma Erickson out of intensive care, off ventilators, and still recovering from a terrible fire that swept thru their home just over two weeks ago.

They are out of the hospital and got to spend a very meaningful day with those who saw them thru it all. The grandkids just couldn't get enough of Norma and Lyle Erickson today.

“That’s the way we like it. We love having them around.”

The couple half expected to spend Thanksgiving at MeritCare still, but instead they were at the home of their son Jerry. They all gathered today, it was no ordinary holiday.

“So thankful to be with our family today.”

Lyle is doing great; this after being rescued, unconscious in that fire. Norma too continues her recovery, her throat still touchy from the burns. Norma was set to host Thanksgiving again this year like she did so many times, but son Jerry was in charge today.

“Just to see everybody come. I told them I don't care if you make a turkey or bologna sandwich, I just want to be with you guys.”

And with children and grandchildren surrounding them, this couple that barely survived the fire, from a real low to a real high. Today took in the beauty of family.

“It’s easy to take it for granted that we all get together. This year was too close to not having them at all so to be here with them is priceless.”

“Best Thanksgiving ever.”
