(WDAY TV) - This will be a special week of thanksgiving for a Moorhead couple. Lyle and Norma Erickson continue their recovery at MeritCare, two weeks after fire swept through their home. Both are now off ventilators and they talked for the first time today with WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand.

Lyle and Norma Erickson joke that they had a first date the other night. These lovebirds of 45-years are now in a private hospital room together at MeritCare.

“That was really wonderful that is one thing they haven't done here before was put a couple together we have been married 45 years and they figured it would help us in healing.”

The couple is now out of intensive care, off breathing machines, but still recovering from that terrible fire.

“Each day we are getting stronger than we were the day before.”

Norma still has trouble talking from burns to her throat and Lyle remembers very little. He collapsed behind a locked door and was rescued by Moorhead Police.

“I would like to shake their hands.”

“How do you say thank you to the people who pulled him out of the house those two words don't seem adequate just to be alive today after everything they did for us our hearts are so full of love for everybody.”

Norma was planning on cooking Thanksgiving Day. They will spend it here in the hospital, more than thankful, knowing things could have gone the other way.

“Probably wouldn't have been here.

“It is a miracle, it is truly a miracle.”

The couple says plans are to rebuild at the site of the fire. Lyle and Norma say they can't leave that neighborhood after living there since the 1970's.
