(WDAY TV) - If sulfate levels increase from water being let into the Sheyenne from Devils Lake, some believe it could have an effect in Fargo.

Fargo city leaders say if the sulfate levels get high enough after being released from the outlet, they may need to install new water treatment equipment. That would cost about $45-million dollars.

Sulfates are a natural laxative and high levels in water can cause diarrhea. Fargo's water plant isn't designed to handle sulfates. On average, Fargo takes water from the Sheyenne about 63 days a year.
