Downstream concerns

Downstream of Fargo-Moorhead, people are worried about what effects a possible diversion could have on their community.

(WDAY TV) - Downstream of Fargo-Moorhead, people are worried about what effects a possible diversion could have on their community. Tonight, a group of people filled the Fellowship Hall at the Halstad Lutheran Church, asking questions, and hoping for answers.

People in town are worried about how much faster water would come their way, if a diversion would be built. Halstad has a certified dike, it protects up to 46 feet. People wonder if the dike will have to be built up, because this spring, water got up to almost 41 feet.

“That could change in a big hurry if you start adding water faster, and if it backs up due to ice jams, log jams, how high is it going to get on us?”

Tomorrow members of the downstream impacts work group will present a letter, asking to be a part of the metropolitan flood management work group. That way they can help make decisions about permanent flood protection.
