Housing the homeless

After wet weather hampered construction, work is moving ahead on Fargo's latest project to house the homeless.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - After wet weather hampered construction, work is moving ahead on Fargo's latest project to house the homeless. It is called the Cooper House, a dream of the non-profit group Beyond Shelter. The 4-million dollar complex is expected to take a bite out of a growing problem in Fargo-Moorhead.

A milestone today for the Cooper House, the trusses rolled in. A chance to top off the new apartment building designed to give the homeless a place to call their own after life in a shelter.

“Designed to end homelessness so they are not cycling in and out of homeless shelters they finally have a place to call home they belong.”

The Cooper House will be staffed 24-7. An effort to closely monitor the residents and the house will be more than just house people there will be an effort to help residents with their addiction and assist them in finding work.

“A lot of the homeless as we know have addiction and mental health issues and to try and treat those without stability of a house is too difficult. So what is most effective is to put them in a house first.”

The Housing Authority wouldn't be building this if there wasn't a need. One reason this is part of a ten year plan to end homelessness in Fargo-Moorhead. The Cooper House is expected to open this coming May.
