Bismarck State College adding campus police

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck State College now has a campus police department, including an armed officer and an unarmed guard.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck State College now has a campus police department, including an armed officer and an unarmed guard.

The college's executive vice president, Dave Clark, calls it a "heightened awareness of the need to be more vigilant" as campuses tighten security around the country.

Clark said BSC also has more than 70 security cameras around campus and an emergency notification system.

BSC's enrollment of 4,000 puts the school third in the state university system, behind North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota, which are four-year schools.

Clark said Minot State University and the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton already have campus police, as do the two larger schools.

Scott Brand, a 52-year-old former Highway Patrol captain, moved into BSC's $42,000 a year security officer position in March.
