MELROSE, Minn. (AP) — A farmer from Melrose was crushed underneath a corn stalk chopper after it slipped off its safety blocks.

The accident happened Thursday morning. Both the owner of the farm and his employee, Joe Leukam (LIKE'-um), were underneath the chopper replacing a center bearing when its hydraulic hoist lost pressure and slipped off the blocks.

The other man was able to get out from under, but the 51-year-old Leukam's chest was crushed under the machine. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Melrose, then by helicopter to St. Cloud Hospital.

He was listed in good condition Friday.
