Linton still trying to recover from flooding

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The south central North Dakota community of Linton is still trying to recover from record spring flooding.

Swollen Beaver Creek and Spring Creek washed out bridges and roads and flooded more than 70 homes in Linton last spring.

Sharon Jangula is the community administrator and economic development director. She said Linton is working on ways to protect itself from a repeat of the disaster.

Jangula said Linton still has a housing shortage as a result of the flooding, but most residents want to stay.

She spoke Thursday at a congressional field hearing chaired by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., on the impacts of spring flooding.

A representative of the Mercer County Water Resource District said the effect on the Knife River and its tributaries was worse than during the 1997 flood disaster. Greg Lange of Hazen believes the Army Corps of Engineers should do a study of the Knife River Basin.
