(WDAY TV) - In just two days, a movie will open that has people buzzing with anticipation. Fear and hope that the end is not near. It is called 2012, a film that explores a global doomsday coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar, December of 2012.
Stories on the internet along with a slick marketing campaign have some young people wondering, is this prediction believable? WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand talks with teens at Fargo South campus II, their teachers, and those who say it's only a movie.
Only in Hollywood could producers have a tsunami surging over monasteries in the Himalayas. But in the soon to be released movie 2012, we will see natural disasters and misaligned planets, all leading to the end of time based on the Mayan calendar.
Impressionable teenagers are talking with each other about it here at Fargo's South campus II.
“I think it is scary to think about the world coming to an end, like everything is gone.”
“No, I am sure once it gets to 2012, I will be counting my days.”
Some buying into the prediction, others not too sure.
“I think unless it is scientifically proven, like nowadays with technology, I don't think I am buying into that.”
This age group especially is finding it hard at times to separate fact from fiction and it is their age that has a lot to do with it.
“A lot of these kids are into those horror movies and things that are beyond their imagination and they have a notion of things going awry and a darker side they are curious about.”
Perhaps the movie is just an attempt to make us all look back at what has happened the last two thousand years, a challenge to learn from all those years before 2012 hits us all quietly, or with command.
Tomorrow night at ten, what do you as parents tell your children when they come to you with questions about 2012 and the predicted end of the world.
