(WDAY Sports) - Moorhead High's Lucas Gemar is hoping to prove that last year's state championship was no fluke when the Minnesota cross country championships go off Saturday in Northfield.

Gemar stunned the field as a sophomore in claiming the state big school title. He's ranked 8th in the state going in this year and says his best race is still ahead of him.

“Going into state I'm in about the same shape I was in last year so if everything falls right things will turn out again hopefully. I have a chance to win, like last year I had a chance and this year I have a chance so I'm just excited to see what happens.”

The Spuds boys and girls teams have both qualified for state. Last year the boys took third and the girls fifth.
