Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - City leaders are re-assuring people today, they will pick the tab for damage caused by Wednesday’s sewer backup in north Fargo. A surprise back up flooded about 30 basements, one homeowner who spent the day hauling out his family's possessions.
Nathan Derby was on his way home from Pittsburg last night; this is what he came home to, a flooded basement full of sewage.
“And there was chunks, and not smelling good.”
The basement toilet had overflowed, spewing waste like a geyser. It's certainly not something the Derby’s expected, especially after this spring.
“We plugged our drains then, and didn't have any problems, so now, it's our turn.”
A construction project on the west side interceptor caused the backup. Faulty equipment and high water pressure caused a plug inside to finally give way.
“There was a mistake or two, but it's just very unfortunate.”
Since the accident, city crews have been trying to help in any way they can, answering questions, and trying to figure out how to avoid another mess. They're also pledging to pick up every penny. The Derby's garage is filled with things from the basement, and they've got a massive dumpster in the driveway.
“So kind of a state of disarray.”
As they clean up, the Derby's just want their home back to normal, as soon as possible. Experts say it's important to get everything out of the home that touched the sewage because it carries bacteria.
