(WDAZ TV) - Tight budgets have two sheriffs departments in North Dakota coming up with creative ways for more man power. Griggs and Steele counties will soon share a deputy between the two departments.
Steele County Sheriff Wayne Beckman and his neighboring Griggs County Sheriff Robert Hook have always helped each other out when they have been in need of help. But soon they will be taking their cooperation a step further.
“Everyone is pretty excited, if this is going to work, nobody has done this before so it’s going to be a learning experience, going to be a little bit of a challenge.”
Steele and Griggs counties are going to share a Deputy. The duties will be split 50/50 between departments. The money will come from a 120-thousand dollar cops grant.
“The Grant will cover salary and benefits, for there years at 100 percent, the fourth year will be a retention year.”
The Counties will split the cost of the fourth year. And can apply for another Cops grant if they decide this joint effort is successful.
“Evaluate the situation to see it works for both of us see. What we need to do from there.”
Both Sheriff's says having a an extra hand available will take some of the work load of them selves and two other deputies in working in each department:
“Always short handed on court days, short handed on vacations and sick leaves.”
The departments had to get the ok from the state and county officials to share the Deputy, which will begin work shortly after the first of the year. Another deputy will have extra presence in the counties towns, especially during the night.
